To meet consumers’ demands for diversification, novelty, popularity, and high-end textile products, chemical fiber products are developing toward high quality and high added value, with high-shrinkage fibers being one such innovation. Fibers with a boiling water shrinkage rate of about 20% are typically referred to as general shrinkage fibers, while fibers with a boiling water shrinkage rate of 35% to 45% are called high shrinkage fibers.
Sustainability serving performance
As you were reading this post, you may have wondered: is recycled polyester the only option when developing sustainable sportswear? What about natural fibres? Of the materials currently available on the market, natural fibres such as Merino wool or Tencel have similar properties to those of polyester. However, as of today, there is no natural fibre or treated natural fibre that has the moisture control of polyester (or polyamide) and can, therefore, be applied to high-performance sports textile.
What is recycled polyester yarn
Recycled polyester is a sustainable yarn. It offsets use of crude oil, conserving precious natural resources & energy. The difference between virgin polyester and recycled polyester is that the former is created from scratch using fossil fuels, whereas the latter relies on post-consumer plastic. Wasted polyester is toxic to the earth. Among the trend is recycled plastic bottles being turned into fabrics which are considered sustainable to keep from them piling in the landfills. From a strictly environmental point of view, recycled polyester is more sustainable than virgin polyester.

Is chemical or mechanical recycling better for polyester?
Currently, mechanical recycling is the most common form of polyester recycling as it’s a simpler process and more easily sourced. The chemical recycling process uses more chemicals and energy than mechanical recycling, posing a question as to whether this toll on the environment is acceptable. On the flip side, it can create a polyester material that is supposedly of equal quality to virgin polyester and has the potential to close the loop on polyester recycling. Although not available on a wide scale yet, there are some suppliers offering this method at a higher cost to mechanical recycling, and we’ll likely see this method develop with less environmental impact in the near future.

Polyester has excellent wrinkle resistance, elasticity and dimensional stability, good insulation performance and a wide range of uses.
