What is polyester?
Polyester - the most common form of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) - is a man-made, synthetic fibre derived from a chemical reaction between petroleum, air and water. It was patented in the 1940s. Since then, the use of polyester in the production of products such as industrial fabrics, furnishing and clothing has increased exponentially.
How is polyester recycled?
Recycled polyester or "rPET" is made by collecting PET (usually in the form of used plastic bottles) and sorting, washing and breaking down the material to spin it into yarn. Mechanically or chemically manufactured yarns can accommodate performance technologies including moisture wicking and temperature regulation. In mechanical recycling, plastic bottles are washed, chopped into flakes and sorted by color, then melted into chips, which are then converted into fibers through a process of extrusion and deformation. Chemical recycling refers to the use of a range of chemicals to clean and break PET before spinning yarn from the resulting material.
